I Signed Away Eight Million To Leave Him Chapter 32

Sloane had wanted to use a man who had spent decades in hiding as her witness.

Now, for money, that same man was dragging her down with him in front of everyone.

I didn’t stop to watch them argue.

Inside the courtroom, the prosecution submitted the old case file and laid out the facts: after his wife died, my father had immediately taken the cash and fled, failing to return for decades.

His attorney requested bail.

“My client is elderly and has no recent criminal record.”

The prosecutor asked only one question.

“A man who disappeared once for twenty years—what assurance do we have that he won’t disappear again?”

The judge denied the request.

As he was led away, my father finally noticed me in the gallery.

“Mara!”

He lunged toward the rail.

“I’m your father! You’re really going to stand there and watch them lock me up until I die?”

I gave him no answer.

When my mother lay on the floor covered in blood, she had looked at him, too.

He hadn’t called an ambulance.

Blood hadn’t made him stop then. It couldn’t make me open a door for him now.

After the hearing, my lawyer told me that Sloane wanted to settle privately.

She was willing to delete the interview and pay compensation.

In return, I would have to state that both sides had merely had “different understandings of the facts” and agree not to pursue the matter further.

“Refuse.”

“She may keep attacking you.”

“Then let her.”

I gave my lawyer the footage of my father accusing her outside the courthouse.

“The lies she told in public need to be taken back in public, too.”
