I Sold His Gifts To Leave My Mafia Husband Chapter 05

The next afternoon, when Matteo drove into the garage, he was still in a decent mood.

The dock ceasefire terms had gone smoothly that morning. The Conti family had agreed to open a new shipping route, and during the celebration, Bianca had draped her arms around his neck, flush with champagne and unwilling to let go.

He had just dropped her off at her apartment when he remembered Daisy.

Her phone call last night had been an annoyance.

But it wasn’t a big deal.

He knew Daisy too well.

She would get angry, she would cry, and she might take down a few photos. But by the time he got home, she would still be there, asking him if he wanted dinner.

She had loved him for so many years.

Matteo had never imagined that kind of love could just end.

He pushed open the front door.

“Daisy, tonight have Rosa—”

His voice died in his throat.

The pair of cream-colored women’s shoes that always sat in the entryway was gone.

Her coat wasn’t on the rack.

He walked into the living room.

All that remained on the wall were twenty-three faded, square-shaped patches on the paint.

The nails were still there.

Every single photo was gone.

His pace quickened.

The bedroom closet stood open. The left side was completely bare. Not a single hanger remained. There was only a fine layer of dust on her vanity.

In the study, her laptop, her pastry recipes, and her business notes were gone, too.

“Daisy!”

The kitchenware was all in its place, but the little notes she always left on the fridge had been torn away.

“Daisy!”

No one answered.

He rushed upstairs and shoved open the guest room door.

It was the room they kept for Pearl for her overnight stays.

The bedding was folded neatly at the foot of the bed.

The room was empty.

Matteo stood in the hallway, his breathing growing heavy.

Then he remembered the dining table.

There was an unfamiliar envelope lying on it.
