The rescue boat shattered into pieces before my eyes.
The entire sea vanished with it.
Then the world pieced itself back together.
The fifth loop began.
The fragments reformed into faces twisted with mockery.
Someone said in my ear, “What, Matteo told you to come here and you actually got excited?”
I shook my head and looked around.
This was the gym’s equipment room, a place students rarely used.
I touched my forehead and remembered.
Matteo had passed me a note, saying he had a surprise for me and to meet him here.
Back then, I’d thought the task was almost complete.
I hadn’t been able to hide my excitement.
I’d run here immediately.
Only to find his friends laughing in a circle.
And Matteo sitting in the middle, a smug look on his face.
He had said, “See? I told her I had a surprise, and she got so happy she came running like an idiot.”
“Surprise. Happy?”
Then a bucket of ice water crashed down over my head.
