My Boss Wanted My Husband Chapter 04
The night before the annual party, Victor called me into his office.
“What cologne does Mark usually wear?”
I froze for a second, then answered automatically.
“Terre d’Hermes. He’s used it for years.”
“Alcohol preference?”
“Single malt whiskey. He thinks it makes him look masculine.”
As I answered, I could not help muttering internally.
This investigation was incredibly detailed.
The questions that followed were even more shocking.
Victor asked about Mark’s clothing style, hobbies, and eventually details so private they belonged firmly inside a marriage.
He asked with a perfectly calm face, as if conducting a professional market survey.
I forced myself to report objectively.
When I finished, I could not hold back.
“Boss, can I ask what exactly you see in him?”
Victor slowly lit a cigarette and said lazily, “The front half has been used. The back half is still brand-new.”
I had no words.
Rich people really did have a special kind of arrogance.
He did not see me as a woman.
He did not even seem to see me as a person.
Then he tapped ash from his cigarette.
“Attraction is about feel. When it feels right, it feels right. You wouldn’t understand.”
I truly did not understand.
But for the sake of money and my future, I chose to respect his feel.
After the questions, he called in the project director.
“Starting tomorrow, mentor her personally. Train her up as fast as possible.”
I nearly cheered.
My career was finally taking off.
On the day of the annual party, everything went as Victor had arranged.
Under the excuse of mingling with employees and understanding the team, he sat beside me and Mark.
That night, Victor toned down his usual terrifying aura.
He was gentlemanly and attentive.
He was witty, knowledgeable, and could talk to Mark about everything from Wall Street trends to football and esports.
Mark was stiff at first.
But with Victor’s deliberate flattery and perfectly timed interest, he soon relaxed.
The two of them chatted happily.
Unfortunately, the harmony did not last long.
Lily’s WhatsApp check-ins arrived like clockwork every fifteen minutes. Each vibration felt like a death summons.
Victor frowned, clearly annoyed.
Under the table, he transferred money to me.
My phone buzzed.
A Venmo payment of fifteen hundred dollars.
Note: Make her stop.
I immediately understood.
I slipped aside, sent Lily a short video of the two men chatting, then called her and lowered my voice.
“My boss thinks highly of Mark and is discussing a partnership with him. This directly affects my promotion and Mark’s performance at the company. If you keep pestering him and irritate my boss, I’m telling you now, I won’t divorce him. I’ll drag this out until you both die of frustration.”
Lily cursed furiously over the phone, but she did stop harassing Mark.
Instead, she bombarded my phone.
“Unwanted ex-wife.”
“Scheming bitch.”
“No wonder he dumped you.”
One message after another, each more disgusting than the last.
I shook with anger.
The alcohol I had drunk seemed to burn in my stomach.
Why?
Why could they cheat so confidently while I, the victim, still had to suffer this humiliation?
A wicked fire surged up inside me.
While Victor drew Mark’s attention away again, my hand shook, and I poured the powder into Mark’s glass.
He noticed nothing and drank it while laughing with Victor.
Before long, Mark’s eyes grew unfocused. His body softened against the chair.
Victor immediately showed concern.
“Mr. Bennett, did you drink too much? Our company has long-term suites at this hotel. Why don’t you stay here tonight? The company will cover it.”
Dazed as he was, Mark had no objection.
I nodded along.
“Thank you, boss.”
Victor helped Mark up, and I followed behind them.
As we neared the room, Victor gave me one look that clearly said I was dismissed.
I understood.
I dismissed myself at lightning speed.
