My Family Regret When They Lose Me Chapter 05
“But… I think I know why she said that.”
“She saw Marco being good to me, saw Chloe clinging to me, and it must have made her feel terrible. She couldn’t take it out on Marco, so she took it out on the child.”
“No matter how much she hates me, she shouldn’t take it out on a five-year-old.”
My mother nodded at once.
“Exactly. She’s never been able to stand me treating you well, not since you were little. Now she can’t even handle Chloe being close to you.”
“She left a child that small home alone. What kind of person does that?”
My father said nothing, but his brow furrowed.
“Still, something’s not right.”
“Beatrice isn’t the type to let things fester. If she was going to make a scene, she would’ve done it days ago, not today.”
His gaze swept over their faces.
“Could she have come home early that day and overheard something?”
As soon as he said it, he turned toward the study.
“Where’s my phone?”
“I’m checking the security camera by the front door. I won’t be able to rest until I know.”
Marco didn’t have time to listen. He grabbed his car keys and rushed out.
He drove fast the whole way. At a red light, he tried calling me several times.
None of the calls went through.
That was when he realized I had blocked him.
The unease in him deepened.
He switched to iMessage and held down the voice message button.
“Beatrice, if you’re angry, take it out on me. Why are you scaring the child?”
“Who told you to leave Chloe home by herself?”
The moment he sent it, a red exclamation point popped up beside the message.
His heart sank.
By the time he got back to the apartment, Chloe was curled up in the corner of the sofa, her face streaked with tears.
At the sight of him, she burst into sobs.
But he didn’t stop to comfort her. He rushed straight into the bedroom.
The skincare products and makeup on the vanity were gone.
The closet doors stood open. My side had been emptied, leaving only a few crooked hangers.
The drawer by the bed was open, too. All my IDs and documents were gone.
In that moment, he finally understood.
I wasn’t throwing a tantrum.
I had really left.
