My Fiancé Betrayed The Wrong Mafia Heiress Chapter 15
Before She Escaped
Luca
I have served the Moretti family for as long as I can remember.
Training. Obedience. Killing.
Those are the only things we are allowed to have.
Until I meet Serafina.
At the time, I do not know who she really is. I only know she is different from everyone else in the training ground.
She is the best among us.
The fastest. The sharpest. The first to recognize every trap the instructors set.
No matter how bad things get, she always finds a way out. She protects the others and makes sure no one is left behind.
As long as she is still standing, we believe we cannot lose.
But her strength is not what makes it impossible for me to look away.
It is the fact that this place never manages to make her cruel.
The training ground treats us like weapons. The instructors force us to hurt one another, using pain and fear to destroy whatever humanity we have left.
Everyone learns to remain silent.
Everyone except her.
Serafina gives her medicine to those who are more seriously injured. She steps forward when someone else is punished. When an instructor gives an order she knows is wrong, she refuses to obey.
She is beaten for it more times than I can count.
Once, an instructor hits her until she can barely stand. Blood runs down her arm and drips onto the floor.
He plants his boot against her shoulder.
“Do you understand what you did wrong?”
Serafina grits her teeth and forces herself back onto her knees.
“No.”
That is who she is.
Stubborn. Bright. Unwilling to bow.
I admire her.
I am too young to understand that it is love. I only know that every time she is hurt, I wish I were the one bleeding instead.
Then the training ground gives us a final test.
They order Serafina to kill someone who grew up beside us.
He has not betrayed the family. He has done nothing wrong.
He has simply been chosen as a sacrifice to prove her loyalty.
Serafina holds the gun, but she does not pull the trigger.
The instructor orders her to fire.
Instead, she turns and strikes him with the grip of the gun.
He collapses.
Alarms tear through the underground training ground. Every exit locks at once, and armed men rush toward us from every direction.
Serafina takes the keys from the unconscious instructor and runs toward the back of the compound.
I know what they will do to her if they catch her.
So I run after her.
I cut the power before she reaches it and open a way through.
She stops at the gap and looks at me.
“You’re not coming with me?”
Of course I want to.
But if no one stays behind to stop the men chasing us, neither of us will escape.
“Go.”
“Luca—”
“Don’t look back.”
Her eyes turn red.
But she does not waste time arguing.
That is another thing I love about her.
She knows when a choice has to be made.
I stand in front of the opening and face the men running toward us. Behind me, her footsteps disappear into the trees.
I do not turn around.
I only hope she runs faster.
Farther.
That she never comes back.
Serafina belongs in the sunlight.
She should not have to rot in this place with the rest of us.
