My Fiancé Swapped Places With His Twin At The Altar Chapter 20
The next day, when she was sent back to our family home, she was burning with a fever so high she was unconscious.
The doctors saved her life.
She woke up.
But something in her mind had broken.
Sometimes she would clutch a pillow and call Matteo’s name.
Sometimes the sight of a wedding photo would make her scream.
Sometimes she would revert to the little girl she used to be, tugging on our mother’s sleeve and crying that Bianca had stolen her things.
She had completely fallen apart.
But Ashley wasn’t the only problem the Cross family faced.
Matteo pulled every single partnership.
No one else in the Moretti family would give them the time of day.
The projects my father had secured through the marriage alliance were canceled one by one.
The cash flow dried up. Creditors came calling. In the end, the company filed for bankruptcy.
Later, Ashley was found abandoned outside a hospital.
The hospital couldn’t reach any family members and finally had to call the police.
When my mother got to that part, the tears finally came.
“If you hadn’t insisted on leaving, none of this would have happened.”
I looked at her and suddenly felt like I was seeing a stranger.
Maybe she hadn’t changed.
Maybe I had just stopped looking at her with a daughter’s hope.
“Was I the one who told Ashley to push me?”
My mother was speechless.
I continued, “Was I the one who told her to lock me in the dressing room?”
My father’s face was dark. “Your sister is already in this state, and you still won’t let it go?”
I looked at him calmly.
“When she was fine, you told me to give in to her.”
“Now that something’s happened to her, you’re still telling me to give in to her.”
“Dad. Mom. Has either of you ever, even once, thought that I could be hurt too?”
My mother’s lips trembled, but she couldn’t say a word.
My brother still said nothing.
He looked at me with guilt in his eyes, and exhaustion.
He used to say he loved me.
Maybe he really had, once.
But his care always came second to Ashley’s.
When I needed him to stand up for me, he didn’t.
When everyone misunderstood me, all he did was tell me not to make a scene.
Whatever guilt he felt now couldn’t fix anything.
Silence fell between us.
I didn’t look at them again. I turned and walked away.
