My Guardian Married My Sister But I’m His Alpha Chapter 29
“Later, a source told me your father had mailed a file to Paris two days before the accident. The delivery address was the apartment you were about to move into.”
“So at the airport—”
“I really did lose that briefcase,” he said. “But yes, I was also looking for that file. I needed to confirm whether you had received it.”
Chiara stared at him, processing the revelation.
“I’m not going to lie to you. At first, I was interested in you because of your father and the possibility of illegal transactions within the Nightfall Pack.”
“And later?” she asked, her voice quiet.
Sterling didn’t answer right away.
He lowered the car window a crack, letting the cool night air rush in, dispersing some of the tension that had built between them.
Chiara’s phone vibrated again.
It was Griffin.
*After you left, I stood at the door for a long time. It was the first time Francesca ever fought with me. She said I was being too polite to Sterling.*
*But I wasn’t being polite. I was just watching you leave with him, and I didn’t know what excuse I had left to stop you.*
The phone kept vibrating, message after message appearing on the screen.
It was as if a dam had broken, and the words he had held back for three years were finally flooding out.
*You asked if I remembered what I promised you when you were sixteen. I remember.*
*I said no matter what happened, I’d be on your side. I didn’t keep that promise.*
*After you left, I went to Paris. I spent a week looking for you, but you’d changed your number, your address. I spent a whole night at Charles de Gaulle, just waiting. When I flew back to New York for your sister’s birthday, all I could think about was whether you were eating, whether anyone was taking care of you.*
As Chiara read, a slow heat rose behind her eyes.
He had looked for her.
He hadn’t just let her go.
He just hadn’t found her.
But why was he saying all this now?
Why, in the garden, when she’d asked him where he stood, had he said nothing?
Why, in the chapel, when she was being forced into an alliance with Tucker, had he remained silent?
Why did he wait until she was in another Alpha’s car, under another Pack’s protection, to finally speak?
Sterling’s voice cut through her thoughts. “Still Griffin?”
“Yes.”
“What’s he saying now?”
“He says he went to Paris to look for me.” Chiara turned off the screen and looked at him. “So which one of you is telling the truth?”
