He was sitting on the sofa, the same laptops and black coffee in front of him.
At the sound of her footsteps, he looked up.
His eyes rested on her face for only a second, but he saw everything.
“What did Francesca say to you?” he asked.
“She said you’re only helping me because you want something. That you want to use me to get to Nightfall.”
Chiara walked in and sat across from him.
“Whatever your original motives were, what you did for me at the chapel and at the Pack estate was real.”
She took a breath. “What you want from this—I don’t want to guess anymore.”
Sterling was silent for a few seconds. Then he reached under the coffee table, pulled out a manila envelope, and placed it in front of her.
The edges were worn, and an international return label was still attached.
The recipient line read: Chiara Moretti.
The address was the apartment in Paris she had never moved into.
The sender was her father.
“The letter your father mailed to Paris,” Sterling said. “It took me three years to get my hands on the original.”
Then he stood, took his coffee into the bedroom, and left her alone with the living room and the choice of whether to open the envelope.
She broke the seal.
