“Ava is a system I led a team to develop. I wrote the core program myself. It cannot make that kind of mistake.”
I stood to the side, shaking my head.
*Ava was wrong. She has never told the truth.*
*Mom, you trusted the wrong one.*
Mrs. Ramirez stopped arguing. She took out her phone and dialed 911.
Mom’s face flushed a deep red.
“You’re wasting emergency services. If they open that car and Morgan is fine, I will have my lawyer contact you. You’ll be paying for every related cost.”
Mrs. Ramirez didn’t answer. She stood by the SUV, urging the dispatcher to hurry.
The police and firefighters arrived quickly.
The moment the lead officer approached the SUV and caught the smell, his expression changed.
“Everybody back up.”
A firefighter inserted a hydraulic spreader into the seam of the trunk. The electronic lock snapped, and the lid began to rise.
Mom saw me curled in the same position as the day before. My hair covered my face, and my body was completely still.
She actually sighed in relief.
“There. You see? She’s just lying there, playing dead. She’s perfectly fine.”
She waited a few seconds. When I didn’t sit up, her anger surged back.
Before the officer could stop her, she rushed to the back of the car, grabbed my hair, and lifted my face for everyone to see.
“Show’s over. Get up and apologize to everyone. Morgan, do you hear me?”
The next second, everyone froze.
