My Pilot Husband Chose Her Mother So I Ruined Him Chapter 01

The Captain Says Wait

My mother is having a cardiac emergency and the flight attendant tells me we can’t have the emergency equipment.

Someone else has it.

The captain who ordered us to wait is my husband.

Three days ago, I bought first-class tickets for my whole family to celebrate my younger sister Emma’s high school graduation.

By coincidence, my husband, Ethan Carter, is the captain flying us to the island.

Halfway through the flight, Mom suddenly grabs her chest.

“Mom?”

She gasps for air, fingers digging into the armrest.

“Claire, get someone.”

A flight attendant rushes over. I tell her Mom has had heart problems for more than ten years and that something is seriously wrong.

She checks Mom, calls another crew member, then hurries away.

Ten minutes later, she comes back.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. The emergency equipment is currently being held for another passenger.”

I stare at her.

“What?”

“Another passenger has a cardiac history. The equipment was moved closer to her seat as a precaution.”

“A precaution?”

My mother is bent over in pain right in front of her.

“She’s not a precaution. She’s having an emergency.”

The flight attendant looks uncomfortable.

“I understand.”

“Then bring it back.”

She hesitates.

“I’ll speak to the captain.”

I grip Mom’s hand while Dad tries to keep her conscious.

Emma is crying silently beside us.

Another ten minutes pass.

Mom’s eyes drift shut.

“Mom!”

I shake her shoulder.

I grab the flight attendant the second she returns.

“My mother has lost consciousness. We need medical help now. Tell the captain we need to divert to the nearest airport.”

“I’m sorry. The captain has instructed us to wait.”

For a second, I think I’ve heard her wrong.

“The captain?”

“Yes.”

“My husband is the captain.”

She says nothing.

“Tell Ethan it’s Linda Morgan. His mother-in-law. She has a serious heart condition.”

“I already told him.”

“And he told us to wait?”

Her silence is answer enough.

By the time we land at our scheduled connection, Mom is barely responsive.

Dad, Emma, and I rush her off the plane and straight to the nearest hospital.

Hours blur together.

At two in the morning, a doctor finally walks out.

“We’ve stabilized her for now.”

The doctor looks exhausted.

“Her heart was under severe stress. She’ll need close monitoring, and we may need to discuss surgery once she’s stable enough.”

I swallow.

“Is she going to be okay?”

“She’s alive. That’s what matters tonight.”

He pauses.

“But you should know, another thirty minutes without proper treatment could have changed the outcome.”

My phone lights up.

A social media post from Sophie Reed.

Ethan’s childhood friend.

The photo shows Sophie, her mother, and the rest of her family smiling in their seats on the plane.

Right beside them is the emergency medical equipment we’d been told was unavailable.

The caption reads:

VIP treatment from Captain Carter himself. Mom has a heart condition, so Ethan made sure the emergency kit stayed right beside us the whole flight.

Didn’t even need it in the end. ❤️

Made it safely to paradise.

Underneath, Ethan has replied.

Enjoy the trip.

I take screenshots of Sophie’s post.

Then I gather the flight information, my messages, Mom’s hospital intake time, and everything I remember about the crew’s responses.

I attach them to a formal safety complaint and send it to the airline’s compliance department.

Then I open the divorce documents my attorney helped me prepare months ago after Ethan and I had one of our worst fights.

I never thought I’d use them.

Now my hand doesn’t shake once.

I send them to Ethan.
