My Wedding Dress In The Garage His Widow In My Home Chapter 05

By the time Owen got to the roadside, he discovered Paige’s car wasn’t broken down at all. It had just run out of gas.

After he filled the tank, Paige said the lightbulb in her flooded apartment had burned out and she was too afraid to go inside to get her things. Irritated, Owen still went with her to buy a replacement bulb.

By the time they were done, it was nearly three in the morning.

He texted Nora: *The lease is only temporary, just to help Paige. I’ll explain everything before closing tomorrow. Don’t make this bigger than it is.*

No reply. His call went straight to voicemail.

Owen sat in his car, unable to sleep. Nora’s icy question echoed in his mind.

*When, exactly, were you planning on telling me?*

He suddenly remembered Nora’s mother’s birthday last month. Nora had reminded him to buy a gift, but he had shown up empty-handed and only said over video call, “Once we’re married, I’ll treat her like my own mother and take good care of her.”

Then he had gone to have dinner with Paige and Sadie.

Nora hadn’t said a word of blame that night. Thinking back on it now, he realized that for Nora, “later” had never once come.

After sunrise, Owen drove Paige back to her apartment.

Paige sat in the passenger seat, holding the lightbulb. “Thank God I had you,” she said softly. “I really wouldn’t have known what to do otherwise.”

Owen kept his eyes on the road.

“Next time, remember to fill your tank.”

Paige smiled and leaned closer to him.

“As long as you’re here, my daughter and I will always have a home.”
