My Wedding Dress In The Garage His Widow In My Home Chapter 07

At five in the morning, the bus pulled into Milwaukee.

Nora dragged her suitcase off and stood on an unfamiliar street corner, methodically blocking Owen’s number, his email, and every one of his social media accounts.

She found a hotel downtown. After checking in, she didn’t sleep. She opened her laptop, updated her portfolio website, and changed her LinkedIn status to “Open to Work.”

Three days later, she walked into an architectural design firm.

Across the conference table, a silver-haired partner adjusted his glasses. “Your last firm is very well known. Why did you leave?”

“I was seeking a new professional challenge,” Nora said, “and a more independent living environment.”

She didn’t mention the wedding.

She didn’t mention Owen.

The partner flipped through her project materials, pausing for a long time on a page about accessibility in public spaces.

“The circulation, the slope calculations, the user-needs analysis—you handled all of this beautifully.” He looked up. “We don’t see many designers who have both a strong aesthetic sense and a genuine understanding of usability.”

When the interview ended, Nora walked through the open-plan office.

Everyone was focused on their own screens. No one asked where she came from, and no one gave her the kind of prying, curious glances that demanded a story.

It was quiet, professional, with clear boundaries.

She liked it very much.

She had barely stepped out of the building when her phone vibrated.

An email from HR.

*Welcome to the team. We look forward to seeing you next Monday.*

Nora stood on the sidewalk and read it twice. When she looked up, the morning sun was spilling across the glass walls of the unfamiliar city.

Her new life had begun.
