Reborn I Refused The Mafia Husband Who Buried Me Alive Chapter 06
The Price of My Freedom
Five days earlier, I walked into one of Vittorio Morelli’s private clubs alone.
Officially, the place belonged to a hospitality company.
Unofficially, everyone important knew who controlled it.
I asked to see Vittorio.
The manager laughed.
“Do you have an appointment?”
“No.”
“Then you don’t see Don Morelli.”
I slid a piece of paper across the desk.
“Give him this.”
The note contained three things.
The name of a rival crew.
A shipment scheduled to enter Chicago in forty-eight hours.
And the exact warehouse where it would disappear.
None of it had happened yet.
In my first life, the failed shipment started a chain of retaliation that eventually dragged half the city’s families into a territorial war.
This time, I knew it was coming.
Twenty minutes later, I was taken upstairs.
Vittorio Morelli sat alone behind a desk.
He was younger than I remembered.
But the eyes were the same.
“Elena Moretti.”
He tapped my note.
“Where did you get this?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Then we’re done.”
He pushed the paper back.
I didn’t take it.
“The shipment is carrying weapons hidden inside imported auto parts. The driver will change vehicles near Cicero. Your people will lose him if they follow the first truck.”
I continued.
“The second vehicle ends up at a warehouse controlled through a shell company registered to a man named Tomas Varga.”
“What do you want?”
“Protection.”
“From whom?”
“My family. The DeLucas. Anyone who thinks they can decide who I marry.”
He leaned back.
“That’s expensive.”
“I know.”
“What else do you have?”
“Enough to make it worth your money.”
I didn’t tell him everything.
Only enough to prove I knew things I shouldn’t.
A planned hit.
A corrupt port official.
A territory dispute that will become a war if no one interferes.
Vittorio listened without interrupting.
Finally, he said, “And you want me to put my name between you and two Mafia families.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because once you do, they won’t risk touching me.”
A faint smile appeared.
“Smart.”
“Is that a yes?”
“It’s a deal.”
He stood.
“But understand something, Elena.”
“If this information is wrong, or if you’re using me to settle some teenage family drama, Morelli protection won’t save you from me.”
“I understand.”
“Good.”
Two days later, every detail I gave him proved accurate.
Three days after that, his lawyers began dismantling my father’s legal and financial control over me.
On the wedding day, Vittorio kept his side of the deal.
Now I have to keep mine.
For the first time, silence feels like freedom instead of punishment.
That evening, an envelope arrives.
Inside is an address.
No message.
I recognize it immediately.
In my first life, that address belonged to an underground casino used by politicians, businessmen, Mafia captains, and foreign crews who didn’t want their meetings recorded anywhere legitimate.
Vittorio isn’t asking me to predict another shipment.
He’s testing how useful I really am.
Lena looks at the address.
“What is this place?”
I fold the paper.
“The reason Don Morelli agreed to protect me.”
“And what happens if you can’t give him what he wants?”
I look out at the city.
“I can.”
Because I’ve already lived through what comes next.
