Mrs. Romano’s face darkened instantly.
“So, because your Virginia can’t compare, you’re just going to be jealous? ”
“Matteo already told me. Virginia is the one who’s always chasing him. ”
“He was just too nice to make a big deal out of it.”
“But I’m not going to ignore it. Your Virginia’s grades are just so-so, and she’s not even that tall. ”
“It’s fine to be ambitious, but a girl should know her place. ”
“Only someone like Krystal is even remotely a match for my Matteo.”
“Virginia, you need to give up. If you have this much free time, you should use it to study.”
My dad slammed his fork down on the table with a crack.
“What is this nonsense? Is your son some kind of prince? ”
“Who are you to talk about who’s worthy of whom? ”
“I’m telling you right now, my daughter will get into Harvard on her own merit. ”
“You tell your son to stay away from her!”
My mother was so angry her hands were trembling.
“Mrs. Romano. For the sake of all the years we’ve been neighbors, I’m not going to argue with you tonight. ”
“But from now on, our families are done. ”
“Don’t you ever pin something like this on my daughter again. We’ve had enough.”
My parents grabbed my hands and we stood up to leave.
