“It’s already been repaid,” I said calmly.

“The brooch Queen Evelyn gave me, and the reputation you destroyed with your own hands tonight, are repayment enough for the act of giving birth to me.”

“And what you’ve done is enough to sever any feeling between us.”

My mother stared at me blankly.

After a long moment, she said in a low voice, “How can you hold a grudge like this?”

“One dress, one gala, one bedroom—those are all such small things. Aren’t we family? Why do you have to keep score?”

I looked at her coldly.

“Since I came back, you’ve never treated me like family.”

“If you truly saw me as your daughter, you would never have put me in that dress to be laughed at, never watched as I was driven from my own room, and never done everything in your power to ruin my reputation just so Isabella could have my marriage alliance.”
