Surprise! My Alpha Mate’s Secret Pups Were Never HIS Chapter 04
Magnus gave a satisfied nod. At the door, he turned back and waved at us.
The second the door clicked shut, Kael’s mouth was at my ear. Voice dropped to a whisper.
“Father’s going to see my mother. She says you’re just a pathetic she-wolf who can’t even have pups. And you’re trying to take us away.”
“This is Father’s Pack. None of us like you. Why haven’t you left yet?”
He flashed his little fangs at me. Grinning.
My throat closed up. Cold ran through me.
I stared at that shut door.
How dare he? How could he lie to my face like that? Did he really think I was made of stone?
I sank into the sofa. The two pups tore around the den, clawing at cushions, yelping and wrestling.
I reached for my phone to call Magnus. Kael smacked it out of my hand. It hit the floor. Screen shattered.
His ears were up. Face scrunched. He bared his teeth.
“Don’t you call him! My mother’s with him right now. You’re nothing. He only keeps you around because he feels sorry for you. Stay out of their way.”
Then he stuck out his tongue. Rolled his eyes.
I stopped breathing for a second. Even a pup this young knew I was “nothing.” Knew Magnus was just keeping me around out of pity.
No wonder no one in Nightshade Pack had batted an eye about Magnus having pups outside our bond.
Kael darted forward. Grabbed the broken phone. A shard sliced his palm. Blood welled up.
He froze. Then let out a screech.
Iris was faster. She’d already lit up her personal phone.
Next thing I knew, Magnus and Freya burst through the door.
Freya lunged and pulled Kael into her arms. Flipped his hand over, back and forth. “Where does it hurt? Let me see. Let mother see.”
Kael sobbed, voice high and sharp.
“She—she broke it herself! I tried to pick it up for her and she called me a mutt! Told me to get out!”
“Mother, I’m scared. I want to go back to Veridian. I want to go home…”
Iris clung to Freya’s leg. Face buried. Shaking. Whimpering.
Magnus’s face went dark. It was the kind of Alpha presence he only showed to enemies.
Before he could speak, Freya jumped in.
Eyes red. Voice shaking.
“Magnus, I know this is my fault. I shouldn’t have—I shouldn’t have fallen for you. I’ve stayed in Veridian all these years. I never wanted to get in your way.”
“Kael’s just little. He doesn’t understand. If Luna’s angry, she can take it out on me. Hit me. Yell at me. I’ll take it.”
She pressed her face into Kael’s neck. Shoulders shaking.
I opened my mouth. Didn’t get a word out.
Magnus’s Alpha presence hit me full force. I’d never seen him look so cold.
“Sigrid. I know you’re upset. But I never thought you’d take it out on pups.”
Every word scraped my bones.
“Kael and Iris are this Pack’s heirs. Who gave you the right to call them mutts? Who gave you the right to tell them to get out?”
“Keep this up and I’ll strip you of your Luna title. I’ll exile you from Nightshade Pack.”
He scooped up Kael and Iris. Turned and headed for the door. Both pups burrowed into his chest, whimpering into his fur.
I stood there in the empty den. Ears still ringing. My wolf curled up in my chest. Couldn’t even whimper anymore.
After a long time, I pulled out the bond severance papers I’d gotten from the High Elder Council. Laid it on the table.
I packed my things. At the door, I stopped. Turned back. Pulled the security footage from the den. Compressed it into a file and sent it to Magnus’s phone.
Then I blocked him. Cut all mind links with every wolf in Nightshade Pack.
I dialed an unknown number.
“I’m ready. Come get me.”
Magnus Nightshade. Get ready for a rejected Luna’s revenge.
