Surprise! My Alpha Mate’s Secret Pups Were Never HIS Chapter 05

(Magnus’s POV)

Magnus took Kael to the pack healer with Freya. The healer said it was just a scratch. Cleaned it. Put some ointment on it. Didn’t even need a wrap.

After that, he took the pups out for roast lamb, then dropped Freya and the pups off at the new den in the southern woods.

Kael clung to Magnus’s neck, wouldn’t let go. Whining about wanting his father to stay the night.

But Magnus couldn’t shake the look Sigrid gave him when he left. Too calm. That expression didn’t look like Sigrid at all. It was the look of a cornered wolf.

He pried Kael’s claws off and grabbed his keys. Kael howled behind him. He didn’t look back.

He’d acted on impulse today. Saw Kael bleeding, Iris crying, and he lost it. Struck out. Didn’t even ask what happened.

He pushed open the pack house door. His voice shook when he called out. “Sigrid!”

Nothing but empty echoes.

He took the stairs two at a time. Threw open the wardrobe. Empty. Hangers clanked against each other, swinging. His eyes went to the wall—the bonding tapestry was gone.

He ran to the bathroom. Her grooming brush—gone. Moonstone claw file—gone. That bitter herbal wash she always used—gone.

Every surface was clean. Like she’d never been there.

His claws started trembling. He pulled out his phone and dialed. No one picked up.

He tried reaching her through the mind link. Nothing. No response. Just dead air.

He slid down onto the sofa. Pulled up the surveillance footage on his phone.

Watched Kael smash the phone himself. Watched his own pup slice his own paw on the shards. Iris lighting up her phone. The two of them playing it perfectly.

On the table beside him—the bond severance papers.

She was gone. Didn’t take a thing. Didn’t want a thing from him. Didn’t want him either.

For the first time, Magnus felt his wolf tremble inside his chest. Last time he felt this scared was twenty years ago.

Back then, debt collectors had blockaded the Pack’s border, howling for repayment. Aldric was locked up in Moon Court. Every night, debt wolves slept in the territory. Rotten meat and bones piled up at the gates.

He’d curled up in a corner of the den back then too. Shaking like a leaf in a storm. Head down. Couldn’t look anyone in the eye.

And Sigrid came crashing in.

She threw herself over him. Covered him. Wrapped her arms around him, cupped his face, pressed her nose to his. “Don’t be scared. I’m here.”

Then she pushed him behind her, planted herself at the door, and faced those snarling wolves alone. She signed a repayment contract. In her own name.

Now his phone lit up. He saw the familiar number. Swiped left to reject. It lit up again. Rejected again. Then a flood of texts came through.

[Dad, my hand hurts so bad. Come see me. Please.]

[Magnus, I can’t calm Kael down. I need you here.]

[I know Luna’s upset. I’ll come apologize to her tomorrow—she can yell at me, hit me, whatever she wants. The pups are just little. They don’t know any better.]

Magnus stared at those words. Something felt off.

Used to be, he thought Freya was sweet. Considerate. Now he read it again—every sentence was a knife aimed at Sigrid.

How did he get so blind?

Freya said her mother was dying. Begged him. Said she’d never given her mother a grandpup, never found a mate. She was crying so hard he couldn’t say no.

He caved. One stupid moment. One night.

She swore up and down she’d raise the pups alone. Never bother him. Never bother his Luna.

But things changed.

First time Kael got sick. First tooth. First hunt. He kept running to Veridian Pack. Couldn’t stop himself.

Magnus sat up straight. Made a decision.

He was wrong today. Shouldn’t have raised a paw against her. He’d apologize. Beg her to come back. Send Kael and Iris back to Veridian. Never see them again.

He got to work. Called his Beta. Started the paperwork to reverse the inheritance transfers.

The den he gave Freya? Taking it back. The Iron Wolf Off-Road? Putting it up for sale.

He had to move fast. While Sigrid was still angry. Get all this mess cleaned up before she came back.

She’d see he’d fixed everything. She’d calm down. They’d go back to how it was.

He was buried in those documents when Freya showed up with the pups.

She stood in the doorway, looking at the Bonding tapestry on the floor, then at the draft contracts in his claws. Her lips pressed together.

“Magnus, every couple fights. But a Bond break contract? Tearing down the tapestry? Isn’t that a bit much?”

Magnus glanced up. “You think she’s just throwing a tantrum?”

Freya saw he was genuinely asking. The corner of her mouth curved up. Her voice stayed soft and sweet.

“What else could it be? Bond severance papers on the table, tapestry down, she runs off—it’s just a big show. Give her a few days. She’ll come back when she cools down.”

“I don’t know her well, but I can tell. She loves you. She’s just embarrassed right now.”

She sighed softly. Stroked Kael’s head. Her voice dipped lower.

“I don’t mean to meddle, Magnus. But look at all this—she’s got the whole Pack worried. You’ll have to deal with the elders too. That’s rough on you.”

“She’s a barren she-wolf after all. They’re more sensitive. You just have to be patient with her. Don’t take it personally.”

She looked up at him. Smiled warm and soft. Eyes crinkled at the corners. Like she was helping him carry some heavy burden.

The last word left her mouth.

And that tapestry slammed into her head with a loud crack.
