The Fourth Life She Guarded Me Chapter 11
In my previous three lives, the guardians I raised weren’t just traitors—they were cold.
Most of the time, they barely acknowledged me.
It was as if they were above it all and I was merely their caretaker.
Paloma was completely different.
She wanted to cling to me every minute of every day.
She could never get enough of my life force.
To keep her from feeling too hungry, I meditated more diligently in this life than I ever had before.
I had to.
If I skipped even one day, she could actually drain me dry.
Sometimes, if she fed too hard, my vision would black out while I was walking.
By the time I recovered, I would already be lying in her arms.
And then she would complain.
“Meredith, you’re so useless. I told you I eat a lot. Why don’t you cultivate more life force to feed me?”
I looked at her, my face a blank mask.
“If you would let go of me for two hours a day, I wouldn’t have to listen to this.”
“Two hours? No. Too long. Half an hour.”
“…”
“What? Isn’t letting me go hungry for half an hour enough for you?”
“Can I find you something else to eat?”
