The Fourth Life She Guarded Me Chapter 10

“What, you regret it?”

“No.”

I gathered my clothes back together.

“I just didn’t expect you to know how to perform a heartbond.”

“I’ve lived for—”

She coughed, swallowing the rest of the sentence.

I stared at her.

“You’ve lived for what?”

“Nothing.”

I lifted a brow.

So she had secrets, too.

She buried her head in my arms again.

She was clearly a full head taller than me, yet she insisted on resting her head against my chest to sleep.

“It lets your life force feed me more smoothly,” she said.

I glanced at the padded basket by the bed.

Actually, it wouldn’t matter if she slept farther away.

My life force was strong enough to fill the entire room.

She followed my gaze and immediately bristled.

“You want me to sleep in that? Did you put that basket here to insult me?”

I said nothing.

What was wrong with the basket?

It was soft and thick. I would have been willing to lie in it myself.

And she still disliked it.

She grabbed a fistful of my hair.

“Meredith, do you not want to raise me anymore? If you don’t, let’s break the heartbond right now.”

I closed my eyes wearily.

“Don’t say things like that. Breaking a heartbond would injure us both. We just signed it. Why would we break it?”

“Because you don’t want to raise me anymore.”

“When did I ever say that?”

“You wanted me to sleep in that thing.”

“…It’s not a bad place to sleep.”

“I don’t care.”

“Fine. You sleep in the bed. I’ll sleep in the basket.”

“You really don’t want to raise me.”

“What now?”

“How can my master sleep in something like that? You’re still insulting me.”

“…”

I rolled my eyes and decisively pretended to be unconscious.

I understood now.

She was difficult to raise.

Really, really difficult.
