The Fourth Life She Guarded Me Chapter 40
I had Paloma fly first to the mountain peak where Grandmother lived.
Just as I’d thought.
Before making his move against me, the family leader had trapped Grandmother inside her residence with a barrier.
Otherwise, she never would have failed to come out and protect me.
Paloma opened her mouth and swallowed the barrier whole.
Hearing the disturbance, Grandmother looked up and immediately strode out.
“Meredith! Are you alright?”
“Grandmother, come with us.”
At once, Grandmother summoned her flying disc and came after us.
“Go where?”
“Do you have any old friends who could shelter us? We need to hide somewhere first.”
“My old friends are mostly in long-term seclusion and don’t receive visitors. And with a disturbance this big around you, they might not be willing to shelter us even if they weren’t.”
“That’s true.”
“Meredith, people’s envy isn’t without reason. You have too many treasures in your hands. You’re only the heir—you can’t suppress what comes with that. Have you thought of a plan?”
“Grandmother, let’s not talk about that right now. We need somewhere to stay first. We can talk about what comes next later.”
“All the good places in this world were claimed by the major families long ago. What, are we really going to live like monsters in the wild and hide in some cave?”
I was silent for a moment, then suddenly looked up at her.
“Grandmother, would you be willing to take over the Romano family?”
She visibly froze.
“Take over the family? You mean… me?”
“Yes.”
“But the family already has a leader.”
“Then we replace him.”
“…”
Grandmother pressed her fingers to her forehead.
“Even if I kill him, the other elders won’t agree.”
“Then we replace the other elders, too.”
Grandmother said nothing.
Standing on her flying disc, her clothes whipping in the wind, she was quiet for a long time.
Then, at last, she sighed softly.
“Alright.”
She looked at me.
“For you, I’ll take that risk.”
