The Man I Couldn’t Escape Chapter 16

Rayden paused and brought the car to a sudden stop.

“Leila, it’s not like that!”

Lorelei turned away from him, lowering her eyes with a mocking expression.

“Sometimes I don’t understand, is it your love that’s cheap, or am I cheap? Was ruining me once not enough for you? You want to keep destroying me. Rayden, I can’t bear this kind of love from you.”

Pain spread from his heart. Rayden swallowed hard, his voice suddenly hoarse. It felt as if something had turned to water, slipping through his fingers no matter how tightly he tried to hold on. He spoke quickly, his words tumbling out incoherently.

“Leila, I used the wrong way. I promise, I will never do it again! Give me one more chance, let’s go home…”

Lorelei did not respond. She slowly rolled up her sleeves and pant legs.

On her snow-white skin, the scars appeared even more hideous.

There was even one scar that ran from her shoulder and neck into her collar, so deep it was shocking. Yet the owner of the body showed no expression.

“These… how did you get them?!” Rayden’s eyes looked as if they had been burned. He stared, his eyes red, his voice trembling.

As if she had heard a joke, Lorelei looked up mockingly. “Mr. Weber, you really are forgetful. If you don’t do things yourself, you forget the orders you gave.”

The smile faded, and the last ripple in Lorelei’s eyes disappeared.

She turned her head to look at the towel soaked in ether on the back seat, her voice cold.

“I told you, in Los Angeles, you can’t take me away.”

The sound of police sirens rang out the moment she finished speaking.

Sebastian slammed the car door and ran over quickly. After making sure Lorelei was unharmed, he pulled her into his arms, his voice hoarse with regret and self-blame. “I’m sorry… Leila, I was late.”

Watching the two of them so close, Rayden’s chest heaved violently. He instinctively tried to rush forward to separate them, but a police officer grabbed him back. “What are you doing! Behave yourself!”

“Leila!”

“Smack!” Catherine raised her hand and suddenly slapped him.

“Don’t call my daughter’s name! You’re not worthy!”

Rayden’s head was knocked to the side by the slap, but unusually, he did not get angry. He turned back, as if clutching at his last hope, and pleaded desperately, “Mom, talk to Leila for me…”

Logan received Lorelei’s call, and after getting off the plane, he brought people over according to the location. When he saw Rayden, he was furious and raised his cane, hitting him hard.

“I told you to apologize, and this is how you do it?!”

Logan was so angry he beat Rayden mercilessly, then threw aside his cane and signaled Rayden’s assistant to pay the bail. “Take him back to San Francisco!”

“Without my order, take his documents and keep them!”

“Without my order, take his documents and keep them!”

Seeing Rayden still staring blankly in the direction Lorelei had left, Logan raised his hand and had someone forcibly drag him away.

“If you really love Leila, let her find her own happiness. Don’t just talk, do something real.”

The stabbing pain in his heart brought a metallic taste to his mouth.

The scenery outside the car window sped by in reverse. Rayden sat motionless like a weathered stone statue, tears silently sliding down his cheeks.

He finally understood.

He had lost his Lorelei with his own hands.

Another three years passed.

The Payne’s mansion.

“Seb, I still haven’t settled the score with you for stealing my sister. If I had known that letting Leila visit my dorm would get her noticed by you, I would never have done it, not in a million years.”

“Alright,” Catherine said with a laugh, patting his back. “You’re about to be a brother-in-law, yet you’re still holding grudges. I think Seb is great. Anyway, I’m very satisfied, and your sister likes him too.”

Sebastian carefully helped Lorelei down the stairs. Hearing this, he raised an eyebrow. “Terry, that’s not fair. I praise you in front of Leila every day, but you talk bad about me in front of Mom.”

Terrance couldn’t outtalk him and snorted coldly. “Who’s Terry? If you ever treat Leila badly, we won’t even be brothers anymore!”

Lorelei’s lips curved into a gentle smile.

Three years ago, Sebastian had publicly announced their engagement in a high-profile way.

The photos and videos on the forums were deleted by the original posters, and the matter gradually lost attention.

After marriage, just as she had once ‘longed for,’ her friends and family were all by her side. Her new life was very happy.

Feeling the little life inside her, she half-closed her eyes and looked at the rising sun outside the white curtains.

This was the first three years.

In the future, she would have many more, even better, three-year periods.
