The One He Left Became The One He Couldn’t Have Chapter 05
Adrian and Summer picked their engagement day.
The exact day I left for Boston.
So hardly anyone came to see me off.
When I landed and turned on my phone.
Messages poured in.
Most of them about Adrian and Summer’s engagement.
I smiled and let them go.
Deleted and blocked every contact attached to that news.
Before coming to Boston, I met with Matteo Ricci.
I didn’t want complications. I didn’t want a spectacle.
Matteo respected my wishes.
He proposed. We exchanged rings.
A quiet engagement. No fanfare.
But my bank account gained a substantial dowry.
And my finger gained a plain wedding band.
As I was about to get into the car to the Ricci estate, my phone rang.
It was Dakota, Adrian’s cousin.
“Gianna, my cousin’s engagement ceremony is about to start. Where are you?”
“I just landed in Boston.”
“Then get back here now. You can still make it.”
“And do what?”
I asked it flat and calm.
Dakota paused. “Gianna, are you so heartbroken you’ve lost your mind?”
“If you don’t come back and fight for him, my cousin really becomes someone else’s.”
“Why would I come back and fight? Isn’t this your cousin’s happy day?”
“Gianna?”
Dakota’s voice pitched high. “Are you insane?”
I was about to hang up when the voice on the line shifted to Summer’s.
“Gianna, you’re not coming to Adrian’s and my engagement?”
“Adrian thinks of you as a sister, after all. That makes me your sister-in-law. I’d really love your blessing.”
I looked toward Matteo Ricci, waiting not far away.
He stood by the car, tall and composed, eyes steady as a fortress wall.
“My blessing?”
I laughed. The sound so even I barely recognized it myself.
“Then I bless you two to stay locked together forever. Don’t ever leak back into the dating pool and ruin someone else.”
I didn’t wait for her response. Hung up. Blocked the number into the black hole of my phone.
