The One He Left Became The One He Couldn’t Have Chapter 06
Adrian stood in the garden smoking with a few friends.
But every so often, his gaze flicked toward Dakota and the others.
He knew they were tipping Gianna off again.
Same as they’d done a hundred times before.
Any woman who got near him.
Those women would immediately tell Gianna.
And Gianna would come running, crying, raging.
He hated that about her. It was exhausting.
So he’d dump the women.
This time, he figured, would be no different.
That’s why he’d deliberately chosen the day Gianna left for Boston.
Just inconvenient timing that the only slot the church could give them was six in the evening.
Adrian had a headache brewing.
If Gianna got word and hopped on a flight right away.
She’d land just in time to crash the engagement.
“Adrian, what if Gianna flies back and throws a fit?”
“Yeah, you getting engaged to someone else? She’s gonna lose it.”
“She’s been pretty quiet lately, though.”
“You and Summer have been all over each other. She hasn’t made a peep.”
“Before? She’d have set the whole city on fire by now.”
Adrian’s cigar had a long column of ash hanging off it.
He forgot to tap it.
His mind was stuck on those last two comments.
Gianna had been too quiet. Unnaturally quiet.
But he knew her. This wasn’t her nature.
He’d rejected her over and over since they were kids.
She always came back harder. Never once backed down.
She was older now. Maybe better at holding it in.
Something flickered through Adrian’s mind.
He let out a scoff and crushed out his cigar.
“Just wait. She’s never been one to behave.”
“Adrian, you’re saying Gianna’s going to come ruin things?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
But he was sure of it. Absolutely sure.
The girl had been stubborn since she was little.
In her teens she devoured romance novels like oxygen.
Used every absurd trick in the book on him.
He knew.
Her recent quiet was just retreat to advance.
He’d bet money that by the time the engagement started at the latest.
Gianna would show.
“Security. If you see a crazy woman in a red dress, stop her. Don’t let her set foot inside.”
The words left his mouth just as Dakota ran up, pale-faced. “Cousin, Gianna’s car is here, but she… she didn’t get out. She just had someone deliver something.”
Adrian looked over. His face went iron-hard.
It was the first gift he’d ever given her. Smashed to pieces.
