I nervously smoothed my skirt.
“This is too far from the ballroom. Isn’t it inappropriate for us to be here alone?”
Gavin’s face was dark.
“Stop acting so proper.”
“You two-faced little liar.”
“I never wanted to get married in the first place, and now you’ve got me completely trapped.”
Caught, I simply lifted my chin with total confidence.
“That’s because you’re lucky.”
“Do you think just anyone gets to have me?”
We stared at each other for several seconds.
Gavin was the first to avert his gaze, as if amused in spite of himself.
The garden lights fell across his face, and the tips of his ears were a little red.
Fine.
He was going to be my husband eventually. I couldn’t bully him too hard.
