The Underboss Voted No So I Chose A New Life Chapter 06
To him, this breakup was no different from the last two.
I would go quiet for a few days, refuse his calls, and wait for him to come back with gifts.
As long as he was willing to make peace, everything would return to normal.
That night, after arriving in the Hamptons, Hadrian sent me a video of the view from his room.
*You’ve always wanted to see the sunrise, right? I’ll film it for you tomorrow morning.*
The message didn’t go through.
He frowned and called me. The call went straight to a recording: my phone was off.
Chloe appeared in the doorway and called for him to come out for a barbecue.
“Is Mireille still mad?”
“Yeah.”
“Maybe you should go back. Otherwise, she’ll think I used the De Luca family name to pull you away from her.”
Hadrian slid his phone back into his pocket.
“She needs to cool off. If I go back now, she’ll think all she has to do is make a scene and I’ll change the inner circle’s plans for her.”
Even as he said it, he glanced back at the dark, silent screen of his phone.
It rained all night in Austin.
When I reported to the bureau, my new coworker, Cameron, set a stack of travel submissions on my desk.
“Head office says you’re great at route planning. We’ve got three Texas features this month. Can you handle it?”
“I can.”
“I heard you just had a wedding. Is relocating right now going to be a problem?”
“The wedding didn’t happen.”
He paused, asked nothing else, and just set the office key beside my hand.
“The break room ceiling leaks a little. Don’t leave any materials on the floor.”
I was so busy I didn’t turn my phone on until that evening.
Thirteen missed calls.
Eleven from Hadrian, two from Sarah.
