The Widow’s Fate They Chose Was My Escape Plan Chapter 20

I lowered my eyes. “Then let the doctor administer a small amount of a short-acting sedative,” I said quietly. “It can make you drowsy and create fluctuations in your vitals. They can reverse it with an antagonist later.”

Eleanor and Sebastian exchanged a look and nodded.

The next day, Sebastian’s condition suddenly “worsened.” When the chairman’s man saw it, he quietly withdrew. Not long after, an encrypted message was sent from his device.

I knew that soon, the chairman would receive word that Sebastian was gravely ill, and the false rumor that I was willing to die with him would spread as well.

By the time we reached Miami, spring was in full bloom.

Sebastian’s cough had improved considerably, though he was still weak.

These days, we were less husband and wife than partners who had supported each other on the long journey. We lived in separate rooms. When he learned that I liked caregiving, he funded my completion of a Florida-approved nursing assistant course. After I passed the exam and was entered onto the state registry, he helped me open a small home-care agency, licensed by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration and clinically supervised by a registered nurse.

One day, I was outside the agency organizing supplies when I heard a hoarse voice.

“Lena.”

It was Ethan and Julian.
