The Wife He Couldn’t Bring Home Chapter 03
The next morning, I washed up and got ready to leave.
The bathroom door was pushed open, and Paige appeared in the mirror.
This was our first time meeting alone since the incident.
“Get out.” I stared at her in the mirror.
“Maya, we were best friends after all. Is this your attitude?”
“For a homewrecker, I’m being polite enough not to drag you out by your hair.”
“Haven’t you realized the situation yet? Right now, the most important person in Cole’s heart is me! If you keep this attitude up, believe it or not, I’ll have him kick you out!”
“Kick me out?” I turned around. “Cole gave me this house when we got married. My name is on the deed. What right do you have?”
“So what if it’s yours? As long as I want it, everything you have will be mine!”
I looked at the woman in front of me, my face full of disappointment. “We used to be best friends. Why did you have to steal my husband? Was I not good enough to you?”
“Your kindness to me was all just charity! We all went to college together, so why did Cole like you? He was the one who was going to take over the entire Mercer Group, and everything he gave you was the best! I’m prettier than you, and I’m more capable than you. He should have been mine!”
“You’re truly shameless. Get out of my way!”
I shoved past her. Paige reached back and grabbed my hair.
“Maya! You caused me to lose my baby. Don’t you feel any guilt at all?”
I shoved her back, knocking her to the ground.
“Using the baby in your belly to frame me! Let me tell you, you really didn’t have to do that. From the day I found out Cole cheated, I decided to leave him! You know exactly how you lost your baby!”
Paige froze.
“Paige!”
Cole’s voice came from outside the door.
A cold glint flashed in Paige’s eyes, and she violently slammed herself into the bathroom glass.
With a loud crash, the mirror shattered all over the floor.
Blood seeped from her forehead.
“Maya, why are you doing this to me? Wasn’t killing my baby enough for you? Do you want to kill me too?”
Cole rushed in. Seeing Paige’s face covered in blood, he instantly flew into a rage.
“Maya! Didn’t I warn you not to touch her!”
He grabbed me by the throat. His grip from years of working out was shockingly strong.
“Do you have a death wish?”
“I didn’t! She did it her—”
The grip on my neck tightened.
I couldn’t breathe, and my vision went dark.
“I told you to admit your mistakes, but you refused. I told you not to hurt her, but you didn’t listen. I’m so disappointed in you.”
Cole let go, and I slumped to the floor.
“Somebody, take Mrs. Mercer to the hospital.”
“Cole, what are you going to do?”
“You’ll know soon enough.” Cole enunciated every word. “I want a life for a life!”
As soon as he spoke, a sharp pain pierced my shoulder, and I passed out entirely.
