Cole gripped the document tightly, his knuckles turning white.
It was clearly him who had signed it. It was him who had told the lawyer to handle it. But at this moment, the stamp felt like a branding iron against his palm, burning with pain.
She left so decisively? She didn’t even want her luggage?
That night, Cole locked himself in his study and smoked all night long.
He thought about how Maya used to always sit on the sofa waiting for him to come home, leaving a light on for him no matter how late it was.
He remembered how she had cried and laughed while holding the pregnancy test, saying, “Cole, we’re going to be parents.”
He remembered the way the light in her eyes had extinguished little by little when she saw him and Paige at the shopping district.
He crushed out his cigarette in the ashtray and rubbed his face hard.
When Paige pushed the door open and walked in, Cole was staring blankly out the window.
She was still wearing her evening gown from the banquet. She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind. “Cole, don’t be sad. You still have me…”
Cole turned around and looked down at her.
Paige stood on her tiptoes, trying to kiss him, but he shoved her away with one hand.
“Get out.”
“Cole…”
“I said, get out.” Cole’s voice was as cold as ice. “From now on, without my permission, you are not allowed to step foot in this room.”
Paige’s face flushed bright red. “You’re still thinking about her? She’s gone! She abandoned everything. She didn’t even want her baby—”
“Paige.” Cole paused between every word. “If you mention her one more time, get the hell out of this house right now.”
Paige clenched her teeth. She gripped the hem of her dress, her nails digging almost into her own flesh.
She turned and slammed the door behind her. Her tears finally fell, but she bit her lip hard to keep from crying out loud.
She was unwilling to accept this.
Why? Why was it that even though Maya was gone, he was still hung up on her?Â
