The Wife He Couldn’t Bring Home Chapter 10
On the evening of the third day, Owen really did come over.
He stood at the door holding a bag of roasted chestnuts, which I loved. He wore a simple white button-down shirt and black pants. His features were gentle, and when he smiled, he looked just like he used to, with shallow dimples on his cheeks.
“Long time no see, Maya.” He handed me the chestnuts. “Your mom said you loved these, and I happened to be passing by, so I bought some.”
I took the chestnuts. They were toasty warm, almost hot to the touch through the paper bag.
I looked up at him, and suddenly my nose stung. Over the years, I had poured my heart and soul into Cole, completely forgetting what it felt like to be cared for by someone else.
“Thanks.” I smiled.
Owen looked at me, his gaze light and soft. “Are you free tomorrow? A new restaurant opened on Main Street. Didn’t you always love spicy food?”
I was just about to answer when hurried knocking suddenly rang out from the front door.
My mom went to answer it, and then it went completely quiet.
I walked over to look, only to see Cole standing outside.
His suit was wrinkled, his tie was crooked, and his eyes were bloodshot. He looked so disheveled that it hardly looked like him at all.
“Mrs. Brennan,” he said, his voice hoarse. “Is Maya here? I want to say a few words to her.”
My mom blocked the doorway. “Mr. Mercer, our Maya has nothing to do with you anymore. Please go back.”
“Mrs. Brennan, I know I was wrong. I’m here to bring her home—”
“Home?” My mom’s voice turned cold. “Do you and her still have a home? After everything you did to my daughter, where were you right after she had her surgery? You went to host a banquet for that woman! Cole, you still have the nerve to come to my house and say you’re taking her home?”Â
