They Canceled My Ticket I Canceled Them Chapter 05
There was no flight to Chicago at eight o’clock the next night.
The tickets they’d bought were probably for an early flight the day after. Marcus had lied about the time on purpose, wanting me to panic when I couldn’t find a seat and come crawling back to him for help.
I booked a direct flight to Chicago for two o’clock the next afternoon.
Not only would I not be leaving with them—I would be leaving earlier.
The headquarters in Paris was waiting for me to complete my onboarding paperwork. This vacation needed to end.
On the last day of the trip, I woke up early.
I packed my suitcase, making sure I hadn’t left anything behind. Then I emailed the HR manager in Paris to confirm I would start remote onboarding the following week and report to headquarters in two weeks.
After that, I took my luggage downstairs to check out.
As I passed through the lobby, the other four were having breakfast in the hotel restaurant.
An array of delicate pastries sat in front of Madison. Marcus was peeling shrimp for her. Daniel and Tyler sat across from them, laughing about something.
From a distance, they looked more like a family than ever.
I didn’t go over. I handed my room key to the front desk and walked straight out of the hotel.
As I got into the car headed for the airport, a new message appeared in the group chat.
Marcus: *Lobby at six tonight for the airport. We won’t wait.*
I tapped *Leave Group*.Â
