Three Days Until Goodbye Chapter 04
The doctor dropped off the meds and practically bolted, clearly unwilling to stick around a second longer.
The social divide between Alexander and me was massive, and his entire crowd looked down on me.
Still, I was his favorite kept woman.
If Sabrina hadn’t been pulling the strings behind the scenes—with Alexander’s silent blessing—some random doctor never would have dared to treat me with such disrespect.
I took the pills in silence.
Once the pain started to dull, I pulled out my phone to shoot the doctor a quick thank-you text.
Instead, Sabrina’s latest social media post stopped me cold.
“A strawberry band-aid is nothing compared to your sweet affection.”
The photo showed a cute little bandage wrapped around Sabrina’s fingertip.
Alexander was holding her finger to his lips, kissing it while looking at her with deep, obvious concern.
It flashed me back to Alexander’s birthday during our first year together.
I’d never cooked a meal in my life, but I whipped up an entire feast from scratch just to make him happy.
The sizzling oil had left my hands red and covered in nasty blisters.
Alexander took maybe two bites, looked totally bored, and didn’t even spend the night.
I never understood why, until I accidentally overheard him on the phone with a friend.
“I spoil Madyson because she’s pretty, obedient, and fun to have around.
“But today, her hands were covered in these blisters. Just looking at them made my stomach turn.”
Suddenly, my phone buzzed.
It was Alexander, and he was all business.
“Brina is traveling abroad with me next month for the first time. She doesn’t know how the process works, so you need to get her paperwork together.”
Sabrina’s high-pitched, overly sweet voice cut through the speaker right after.
“I might not know what I’m doing, but I have Alex to spoil me.
“Madyson, I’m super impatient, so please have it all sorted out by tonight.”
Alexander tried to step in.
“Mady is sick tonight, don’t push her too hard—”
“Fine,” I interrupted, agreeing instantly.
Five years ago, completely broke and desperate, I took a cocktail waitressing job at an upscale nightclub.
If Alexander hadn’t dropped a fortune to buy me out of there, I never would have escaped those creeping executives in one piece.
Once I finished this paperwork, my debt to him would be paid in full.
Pushing through the pain, I dragged myself out of bed and booted up my laptop to start working.
I pulled an all-nighter and finally finished exactly what Alexander had asked for.
The next morning, I took the file straight to the Broughton Group.
The receptionist knew about my arrangement with Alexander and had always been incredibly warm to me in the past.
This time, however, she looked totally panicked and stepped right into my path.
“Ms. Dawes, Mr. Broughton is tied up right now. Let me show you to the lounge.”
As we walked, I caught some employees gossiping a few steps away.
“Mr. Broughton felt so bad about Ms. Homer having to walk in heels that he literally carried her from the car all the way to his office. It was like something out of a movie.”
The receptionist winced, opening her mouth to offer some awkward excuse.
But when she saw the deadpan look on my face, she kept quiet.
A few minutes later, Alexander called and told me to bring the paperwork back to his office.
I pushed the door open and found Sabrina perched on Alexander’s lap. They were staring at each other, the chemistry intense and obvious.
Sabrina flashed a sweet little smile as she took the file from me, then grabbed a bowl of soup off the desk.
“Thanks for doing this, Madyson. Here, you should try some of this soup Alex made me.”
I shot Alexander a genuinely shocked look.
We’d lived together for five years, and it took Sabrina for me to find out the man actually knew his way around a kitchen.
I reached out to take the bowl, but Sabrina intentionally let her fingers slip.
The bowl shattered on the floor, splashing scalding broth all over my bare calves. I sucked in a sharp, sudden breath as the pain seared my skin.
“Alex, Madyson must hate me! She burned me on purpose, but please, don’t be mad at her…”
And just like that, she dissolved into a puddle of heavy, dramatic tears.
Alexander yanked her into his arms, frantic as he checked her over.
Even when he saw that only her shoes had caught a few drops, he shot me a glare so cold it stung.
“Mady, apologize to Brina right now. And wipe off her shoes.”
