Tit For Tat Chapter 14
Sloane cried, “I just couldn’t stand seeing her treat you like that!”
“You turned everyone against you for her, and then she immediately turned around and started working with Noah. People were going to speculate anyway. I just helped them see things more clearly.”
Adrian let out a sudden, cold laugh.
“Helped them see clearly?”
“The night before the engagement, you said you wanted everyone to see if she could take a joke.”
Sloane froze.
“Adrian, it wasn’t just my idea that night. You said she was always so uptight. You said you’d protected her for too long and she needed to learn to face her past.”
The office went utterly still.
The color drained from Adrian’s face.
She wasn’t wrong.
The backend log could prove he’d hit send, but it couldn’t prove what he’d said beforehand.
Sloane must have thought that by dragging him down with her, he would have no choice but to take her side.
With trembling hands, she pulled up an audio file on her phone.
“Listen.”
The recording was filled with the music and laughter from the private room.
Sloane’s voice: “What’s the fun in just showing the groomsmen? Send it to everyone. Let’s see if the future Mrs. Cole has a sense of humor.”
Another voice warned, “There are bankers and reporters on that list.”
Then came Adrian’s voice, thick with alcohol.
“So what? None of it’s fake.”
“She’s marrying me tomorrow. It’s not like she’s going to break up with me over something this small.”
A mouse clicked, followed by a burst of laughter.
Adrian stood as if those words had nailed him to the floor.
