“The project has only just begun. The base is still completely barren, and construction hasn’t even started yet,” the chief person in charge said with a smile as he introduced the place to Jaylen. “But the engineering department should already have drafted the initial design for the Lunar Ladder. We can go take a look.”
“That’s exactly why Mr. Canyer has such good judgment,” someone in the group chimed in. “He came straight to the engineering department the moment he arrived. You can tell he knows what he’s doing.”
In truth, Jaylen did not understand any of it at all. He might have been a genius with an exceptionally high IQ, but he had never studied aerospace. Naturally, he knew nothing about something this specialized. He only wanted one thing: to see Seraphina as soon as possible.
As they spoke, the group arrived at the engineering department. While leading Jaylen forward, the chief person in charge said with a smile, “To be honest, I don’t really understand the engineering department’s work either. This isn’t my field. But we have a beautiful engineer in our department, and she’s extremely professional. I’ll have her come explain it to you.”
As he spoke, the chief person in charge raised his voice. “Seraphina! Come here for a second! Help me receive our investor.”
“Yes, Chief Commander, I’ll be right there.” The familiar female voice rang out, and Jaylen’s heart instantly clenched tight.
Then, in the very next second, he saw Seraphina turn around and walk toward him.
Yet the moment Seraphina took a step forward, her whole body froze.
Her heartbeat sped up, her blood seemed to surge backward, and her face turned deathly pale in that instant.
Because she had seen Jaylen.
“Sera, how are you here?” Jaylen asked, putting on a look of great surprise. He walked over slowly, a polite and perfectly measured smile on his incomparably handsome face. “Do you know how worried I was after you suddenly disappeared?”
At the very instant he saw Seraphina, Jaylen’s dark eyes had been filled with naked aggression. He had wanted to rush forward, wanted to pull Seraphina tightly into his arms. He was so crazed he had even wanted to meld her into his flesh and blood.
But he forced all that feral desire down bit by bit. This was a military department base; he could not be too reckless here. He had to proceed carefully, step by step, if he wanted to bring Seraphina back under his control.
So in only an instant, Jaylen hid every trace of personal desire in his eyes. He stepped forward with a smile, then seized Seraphina’s hand in a manner that seemed casual but was in fact highly aggressive. “Sera, I’ve missed you so much.”
“Wait, you two know each other?” the chief person in charge of the base asked in astonishment. “Seraphina, why have you never mentioned that you know such an outstanding young entrepreneur as Mr. Canyer?”
Seraphina gave a dry laugh and was just about to answer when Jaylen spoke before she could. “Sera and I are more than acquainted. We’re husband and wife. We’ve been married for five years. I suppose she never mentioned me because she wanted to avoid any appearance of impropriety.”
At that, it was not only the chief person in charge of the base who was shocked. The entire engineering department was stunned.
“Professor Astriage, I never imagined you married so well. I’ve even heard of the Canyer Group overseas.”
“That’s why Professor Astriage is the one who truly loves science. Even after marrying so well, she still came out to the desert to suffer with us.”
Everyone began talking at once, all of them envying how well Seraphina had married.
Yet that was not even the worst part. The worst part was that after hearing Jaylen say that he and Seraphina were husband and wife, the chief person in charge of the base actually burst out laughing and said, “No wonder Mr. Canyer was so generous. He invested $60,000,000,000 in our project all at once. Since Mr. Canyer spent so much money in one go, he must have come to our base as an investor to see Seraphina, right?”
“Ordinarily, by regulation, investors are only allowed to visit the base for one day. But since Mr. Canyer and Seraphina are husband and wife, you can stay a few extra days. It’ll also give you two newly reunited lovebirds a chance to catch up.”
