Westley You Are Late Chapter 05
The laughter inside the private room died.
I was nudged inside.
Every eye in the room fell on me.
Sofia was the first to her feet, a smile plastered on her face.
“Brielle, perfect timing. There’s something I wanted to talk to you about.”
She walked over, linking her arm through mine as if we were the best of friends.
“That project you’ve been working on? Give it to me.”
“Don’t worry,” she added. “I won’t take the credit when it’s done.”
I didn’t look at her. My eyes were fixed on Westley.
“Is that what you want, too?”
Westley flicked open a Zippo lighter, the flame dancing in his hand.
“She just got dumped, she’s a mess. Just let her have this one. I’ll make it up to you, find you something better.”
I said nothing.
Sofia started again. “We’re all friends here. Why be so petty—”
Before she could finish, I slapped her.
The sound cracked through the silence.
Sofia clutched her cheek, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“You hit me?”
“Who the hell do you think you are?” I stared right back at her. “You think you’re worthy of my project?”
Westley shot to his feet and grabbed my wrist, his grip bruisingly tight.
“Brielle, are you out of your mind?”
I looked up at him and laughed, a hollow, bitter sound.
“Yes, I am. I must be crazy to have believed you, over and over again.”
No one in the room made a sound.
Westley’s grip on my wrist didn’t loosen.
Something in his eyes shifted, but I no longer cared enough to decipher it.
His hand felt hot and clammy against my skin. All I wanted was to shake him off.
A familiar nausea churned in my stomach.
I tore my arm out of his grasp and glanced at the red marks blooming on my wrist.
“If you feel so bad for her, give her your next big project. Don’t touch what’s mine.”
Then I turned my gaze on Sofia.
“You’re not getting the project.”
“As for the man—if you want him, he’s all yours.”
With that, I turned and walked out.
The hallway was empty.
No footsteps followed me.
It was to be expected.
At least I saw him for who he was before we made it to the altar.
From that day forward, I cut him out of my life completely.
I focused on preparing for surgery, on my work. I had nothing more to do with him.
I thought that was how our story would end.
Until the day before my surgery, when I saw him again at the hospital.
