You Shipped Me Off I Married Your Boss Chapter 18
Liam and I set our wedding date for two weeks out. Tight.
But the Campbells had been preparing for his marriage for years.
So despite the rush, everything moved smoothly.
Aunt Helen told me Liam nearly drowned at summer camp as a child.
After he recovered, the family took him to see a bishop.
He said Liam had to marry in October of his twenty-eighth year. Then he’d have a long, healthy, prosperous life.
The Campbell elders took these things seriously.
When Aunt Helen first brought up this marriage, they’d already checked my horoscope.
Our signs aligned. A match ordained by God.
After I agreed, the whole family was overjoyed.
I received so many precious gifts.
The most meaningful: a pair of diamond earrings that had belonged to Liam’s birth mother.
When Liam gave them to me, I was deeply moved. And then, guilt.
I should give him something equally meaningful in return.
The perfect gift was my mother’s brooch. But it was still with Brian.
Maybe sensing my mood, Liam took me to the back garden facing Lake Michigan.
“Skylar. Are you unhappy?”
He looked at me with such concern.
The diamond earrings on my ears sparkled, impossibly brilliant.
Even someone clueless about jewelry could tell they were priceless.
I was raised to repay kindness tenfold. A hundredfold.
I mentally ran through everything I could give Liam. Everything felt inadequate.
The guilt already sat heavy. And then his gentle gazeāso steady, so warm.
I didn’t cry when I decided to let go of Brian.
I didn’t cry leaving LA after twenty-one years.
I didn’t cry when Brian refused to return the brooch.
But right then, the tears just fell.
