He Tested Me With Prenup I Left Him With Regret Chapter 26
She had once told me that when she grew up, she wanted to go with me to see the biggest library in the world.
I gave my answer to my lawyer.
“You can arrange one video call.”
“Does Grant need to be present?”
“No. And he cannot be.”
When the call connected, Lucy was sitting alone in an empty classroom at her school.
The moment she saw me, her eyes went red.
“You really kept the drawings?”
I held the second one up to the camera.
“I’ve had them all along.”
She lowered her head, and after a long moment, asked, “Then why did you remove me as your emergency contact?”
I didn’t lie to her the way adults often do to children.
“Because they kept using you to test me.”
“If I had stayed, every time they brought you up, I would have had to guess whether it was real or just another trap.”
Tears started sliding down Lucy’s face.
“So it wasn’t because you didn’t want me?”
“Lucy, you were never something for someone to want or not want.”
I paused.
“Leaving you was the hardest part of ending that relationship. But the person taking care of you has to respect boundaries first. Your father couldn’t do that back then.”
She wiped her eyes with her sleeve.
“Celeste said you’d come back eventually because you couldn’t bear to lose me.”
“She got half of that right.”
Lucy looked up.
“I really couldn’t bear to lose you.”
“But not being able to let you go doesn’t mean I should go back to a place that hurts me.”
This time, she understood.
Before the call ended, Lucy asked, “Can I still contact you in the future?”
“Yes.”
“But that means just you and me.”
“Not Grant. Not the Holloway family.”
She nodded seriously.
“Okay.”
