Rowan froze.

He dropped to his knees in the snow and tried to fit the fragments back together. Every time he managed to piece out the rough shape, the slightest movement made it collapse.

After a long while, he caught the hem of my dress.

“I’m sorry.”

I tried to pull him up.

Instead, he suddenly doubled over, coughing blood. It took a long time before he could steady himself enough to sit upright.

“Give me a few more days. I can make another one. I learn quickly.”

I thought, too, of the royal medical wing, and the papers scattered across the floor, each one covered with the name Julian.

Only that one bloodstained R had stood apart, lonely and separate from all the others.
