Kill Him Nine Times Chapter 15
The cold seized my entire body.
So that was the surprise. A bucket of ice water.
Not the confession I had imagined.
His friends laughed at me from the sidelines.
“You don’t actually think Matteo likes you, do you? Here’s a reality check: the girl he likes is in Europe, and she’s coming back in six months.”
“When Genevieve gets back, your time as a substitute is over.”
I looked up at Matteo.
The smile on his face vanished.
The next second, he looked like someone breaking the surface after nearly drowning, his mouth open as he gasped for breath.
I looked at him, then at the room around us.
Then I walked over, picked up a barbell plate from the corner, and brought it down on Matteo’s head before he could fully process what was happening.
The crack of his skull splitting was sickeningly clear in the quiet room.
The people around us froze for a second.
Then they completely lost it.
“She killed him!”
“Call 911!”
“Cosima, how could you be so cruel? Matteo was just joking with you!”
Everyone ran.
Matteo fell to the floor.
Blood slowly seeped from the back of his head, spreading across the ground.
His mouth still moved, as if he was trying to say something.
But even leaning close, I couldn’t make it out.
The system was on the verge of collapse in my head.
“How could you kill him again? This time he might have been willing to be your girlfriend!”
That was when I tapped my forehead.
I’d had the nagging feeling I’d forgotten something.
Turns out I’d forgotten to ask the most important question first.
I looked at Matteo’s eyes as they slowly lost focus and said, very seriously, “Sorry. I forgot to ask this time.”
“When we meet again, I’ll remember.”
