You Shipped Me Off I Married Your Boss Chapter 19

Liam clearly panicked.

A gentleman through and through. Impeccable breeding.

But absolutely no experience comforting a crying woman.

His attempt to dry my tears with his pocket square was clumsy. Endearingly so.

I laughed through the tears.

“Liam. You’re smearing my makeup…”

“You’re wearing makeup?”

“You can’t tell?”

He said, completely serious, “I thought you were just naturally this beautiful.”

I admit it. I’m vain. Shallow.

And it worked. I felt better.

“Liam. You’re too good at this. Have you had a lot of girlfriends?”

“Does kindergarten count?”

My eyes went wide.

“None since you grew up?”

“I’d be lying if I said no. I dated someone at Columbia. We realized we weren’t right for each other. Parted on good terms.”

“Was there someone after that? Someone you loved?”

A pause.

“There was. But as it happened, she didn’t feel the same way.”

Something clicked. So that was it.

The woman he loved had loved someone else. So he’d locked his heart away and agreed to this arrangement.

A strange, faint bitterness stirred in me.

But I brushed it away. Maybe this was better. Less guilt to carry.

As I left the Campbell estate that day, Liam said something.

“Skylar. I want you to truly see me as your future husband. I know you’re independent. Capable. But leaning on me a little—that would make me happy too.”

Something in my chest cracked open. Just a sliver.

“Liam. I will.”

I gave him a pair of cufflinks and a tie bar first.

Not the most expensive gifts.

But I’d designed them myself on a whim some time ago.

The lines I’d drawn were clean.

Because when I sketched them, I hadn’t been thinking of Brian.

I’d been thinking of my parents. Missing them.

Every line was a thought of them.
