You Shipped Me Off I Married Your Boss Chapter 20

Wedding preparations kicked into high gear.

But the Campbells kept the bride’s identity under wraps.

I was new to the school. I didn’t want attention.

And there was still unfinished business between Brian and me.

When Brian sent me to Chicago, I think he meant for me to never come back.

The staff had packed up nearly everything I owned and shipped it ahead.

Including every gift he’d given me over the past ten years.

Among them: an extremely expensive pink diamond ring.

A high school graduation present from Brian.

I’d once treasured it above all else.

Every time I was hurting, just seeing that ring lifted me.

A ring always carried more weight than other gifts.

But I’d come to understand.

When someone doesn’t love you—or when their feelings aren’t pure—even a marriage contract means nothing.

Let alone these trinkets.

Going through it all, one piece at a time, I felt nothing. Calm. No ripples.

By the time the jewelry box was empty, my heart had never felt lighter.

As I was packing everything for shipping, messages came in.

From the equestrian club. My horse was sick. Lethargic. Refusing feed.

The photos made my eyes sting.

They said she missed me. I always visited every few days. But this time, I hadn’t come.

I called immediately.

“Miss Skylar, Mr. Crawford is here. He can explain.”

Before I could react, Brian’s voice came through.

“Skylar. When you decided to lease that horse, what did you promise? Have you forgotten?”

I hadn’t.

Every Crawford child had their own horse.

The only rule: choose responsibly, care for it fully. No abandonment.

“But you’re the one who decided six months ago that I was going to Chicago.”

“Skylar.”

Brian laughed. Cold.

“Since when do you do what you’re told? You’ve always been good at causing trouble. Throwing fits.”

“Mom and Dad adore you. One tear and they’d never let you go.”

His voice hardened.

“So you don’t really care about this horse, do you?”

But even as he said it, something inside Brian stumbled.

He heard the truth beneath his own words for the first time.

Skylar didn’t really care that much about him either.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have actually gone to Chicago.

Wouldn’t have ignored his engagement.

Wouldn’t have been a no-show at the ceremony.

Wouldn’t have demanded her brooch back.
