Among All The Stars I Found You Chapter 07

Preston picked up the papers. When he saw my signature, his fingers were trembling.

What had happened?

He’d been buried in family and company business for the past two days. He hadn’t had a proper conversation with me.

How had things escalated to divorce?

He remembered my confession.

That I wasn’t Leo’s biological mother.

I had mentioned divorce then, too.

But hadn’t he told me they would talk later?

I almost never argued with him.

When he told me to wait, I always waited.

So why had I left this time without a word?

He flipped through the document and saw the clause stating that the wife was to be paid two million dollars. Beside it, in neat script, were the words: *Paid in full.*

He let out a humorless laugh.

He remembered it clearly.

When I first came to the Rhodes family, my mother had been in urgent need of surgery, yet I couldn’t bring myself to ask him for the money, almost delaying her treatment.

This time, when I’d asked for money, he had transferred it without a second thought.

But looking at the document now, all he felt was a suffocating weight in his chest.

Without me, the house felt vast and empty.

A sticky note I’d written was still on the fridge.

*Don’t drink ice water.*

Once, a stomach bug had landed him in the hospital for a few days.

After that, I started cooking for him myself.

At every meal, I would watch him until he’d had at least a few bites before I’d relax.

He had always assumed I felt something for him.

But now, it seemed that had just been wishful thinking.

He had to ask me.

He had to know why I had left.

But he suddenly realized he had no idea where to find me.

My father was gone. My mother was gone.

And he’d never heard me mention a single close friend.

Only then did it truly hit him how little he had ever cared for me.

So little that now that he’d lost me, he didn’t even know where to begin to look.
