His mother sighed.
“We had no choice back then. Patrick was dead, and the board was in chaos. We had to put you in his place.”
“We told the world the accident left you with memory loss. It was the only way to explain the changes in your personality, in your habits, without raising suspicion.”
“Now the company is stable. You don’t have to keep living as Patrick anymore.”
She added, “Selena is a good girl. Not just anyone would be willing to raise another woman’s child.”
“Juliette was never her friend. She just treated Selena like a servant.”
At that, his mother’s eyes reddened.
Patrick had been raised from birth as the heir.
Preston, on the other hand, had lived a much freer life in Europe.
It wasn’t until Patrick’s accident that the family had called him back.
That day, when Selena appeared before him with a baby, claiming the child was his, Preston had been utterly stunned.
Later, the paternity test came back, and the result silenced everyone.
A standard paternity test can’t distinguish between identical twins.
Leo was, unequivocally, a Rhodes.
When the news reached his mother, she held Leo and cried for a long, long time.
After the initial joy, the Rhodes family naturally investigated both Selena and Juliette.
When the truth came out, his mother’s heart hardened against Juliette.
As for Selena, her actions only earned her more respect.
In the end, Selena’s only real lie was one of omission.
The fact that she had struggled for so long to raise a child that wasn’t hers spoke volumes.
At first, his mother had planned to give Selena a large sum of money as a thank you for taking care of Leo.
But Preston couldn’t get the image of her holding the baby out of his mind.
She had been so thin.
And her eyes had been so bright.
