I didn’t realize my fiancé had canceled my mother’s lifeline until the rescue team pulled her wheelchair out of the floodwaters.
On the eve of the hurricane, my mother’s chronic illness flared up. She was in a wheelchair and needed to evacuate immediately.
The accessible van I’d arranged never showed, and the authorities were already starting to close the roads.
All I could do was beg my fiancé, over and over, to send a car.
He never picked up. He thought I cared too much about my mother and that I needed to be taught a lesson.
He even took the frantic, sobbing voicemail I left him and gave it to a podcaster for a paid segment.
While my mother was still trapped in the storm, my pleas for help were being edited into a cautionary tale about “using a disaster to manipulate your partner.”
The show’s conclusion was simple:
“Stop rescuing her. Let her deal with the consequences herself.”
My fiancé publicly tipped the podcast, praising it for its “brutal honesty.”
The comments section filled with praise for his calm and accusations that I was using my mother’s life for a sympathy-grabbing performance.
I clutched my phone and waited for the sun to rise.
No car ever came.
The next day, all the rescue team found in the flooded house was her wheelchair.
My mother was gone.
And my fiancé said he was ready to “face this grief with me.”
I closed our joint account and paid for the funeral with my own money.
Watching the footage of the ruins on the news, I canceled our appointment at City Hall.
This time, I wasn’t the one who was going to have to bear the consequences.
