He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 18

He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 18

The news channels played grainy footage of the convoy and the cheering crowds on a loop.

I was wondering if Theo was among them when Sophie sent me a message, telling me to come to her house at once.

When I reached the lakeside pavilion, he was there.

Theo was still in his black combat uniform, not yet having had a chance to change. His skin was tanner than before, and a series of half-healed cuts marked the back of his hand.

When he saw me, his eyes lit up with a smile.

We stood facing each other, and for a moment, neither of us spoke.

I couldn’t help but silently curse Sophie.

She had said Theo was quiet and loved to read. She had somehow neglected to mention that he was also an officer in the Royal Guard.

The wind whipped a strand of hair across my face.

The tips of Theo’s ears reddened, and he lifted a hand as if to smooth it back for me.

But then Vanessa’s voice cut through the air from behind us.

“Sis, who is this handsome commander?”

My heart plummeted.

Vanessa, wearing a bright pink dress, was looking at Theo with an expression I knew all too well.

Excitement. Eagerness. A hunger to win.

It was the exact look she got every time she wanted to steal something of mine.

Before I could speak, she glided over and linked her arm through mine in a show of false intimacy.

“Laurel, when did you meet someone like this? Why have you been hiding him from me?”
