He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 19

She turned to Theo, gracing him with her sweetest smile.

“Hello. I’m her twin sister, Vanessa Jennings.”

Theo merely gave a slight nod, his gaze quickly returning to me.

Undeterred, Vanessa pressed on.

“We’re identical twins. See? We’re exactly alike, aren’t we? Most people can’t tell us apart even after meeting us a few times.”

Theo didn’t answer her.

He only said to me, his voice gentle, “Since your sister is here, I’ll take my leave. What I promised you still stands. You’ll receive formal notice tomorrow.”

My whole life, whenever Vanessa and I stood together, everyone’s eyes went to her first.

This was the first time someone’s gaze had remained fixed on me.

For the first time, I felt completely, utterly seen.

“Alright,” I said, nodding firmly.

After Theo left, Vanessa angrily swept a cup from the table.

“How dare you date a Royal Guard officer behind our family’s back? I’m telling Dad! He’ll lock you up again!”

I ignored her.

This time, her tattling did her no good.

Sophie escorted me home personally and explained that Theo was Reid’s old friend, that he was genuinely interested in me, and that he would soon be making a formal proposal of marriage.

My parents didn’t know Theo’s exact identity, but with Reid vouching for him, their attitude shifted completely.

Even in her delight, Mother remained cautious. “His status doesn’t need to be too high. Laurel overthinks things. If she marries a man with too much power, I’ll only worry she won’t know how to handle the relationship. Men like that are surrounded by temptation. What if problems arise later?”

Sophie’s face went pale with anger.

Before she left, she couldn’t stop herself from saying, “Diana, when sisters are enemies for years, it’s often because of their parents’ favoritism.”

“If you keep refusing to see that, then one day, when Laurel truly leaves you behind, it will be too late for regrets.”
