Theo’s voice was like ice.
“I don’t accept food from strangers.”
Vanessa stiffened, then forced a sweet tone. “But we’re engaged. We’re getting married soon. How am I a stranger?”
Theo pressed the call button on the table without a flicker of hesitation.
“For Laurel’s sake, I’m giving you one last chance.”
“Leave now. If you impersonate her to approach a member of the royal family again, the Royal Guard will treat you as a security threat.”
Vanessa’s legs nearly gave out, and she gripped the table to steady herself.
“How could you tell?” she blurted out. “We look exactly the same.”
“I’m more outgoing than she is, and I know how to please people. Anything she can do, I can do better.”
Theo let out a short, derisive laugh.
“The same face doesn’t make you the same person.”
“When Laurel looks at me, she’s actually listening to what I’m saying. All I see in your eyes is a hunger for power and a desperate need to win.”
Two Royal Guard soldiers were already ascending the steps to the terrace.
Humiliated and furious, Vanessa spotted me standing a short distance away. She threw her head back and shouted, “King Theo, I was only trying to protect you!”
“Laurel is not the innocent woman she pretends to be! She secretly exchanged notes with my fiancé, Nolan, for nearly a year. She has always been in love with him!”
