He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 25
When we reached a secluded forest path, I hesitated before finally stopping.
“What Vanessa said is true.”
“I was the one who exchanged notes with Nolan. And I really did like the person I thought he was in those letters.”
“But once he chose Vanessa, I let him go. The day I went to Sophie’s was because I wanted to leave my family and this city behind.”
“If you want to call off the engagement, I won’t blame you.”
I lowered my head, my body tense as I waited for his reply.
Theo was silent for a long time.
When I finally dared to look up, he was watching me with an expression of helpless affection.
“Laurel, your only flaw is that you always prepare yourself for the worst possible outcome.”
“The fact that you were willing to tell me this only makes me trust you more.”
“The first time we met, I was hiding my identity, too. But in that pavilion, for the first time in my life, I got to talk to a woman as an ordinary man—about books, about life—not about the throne or political gain.”
“Every night on the border, I thought of you.”
“I trust my choice. And I won’t deny who you are now just because you once liked someone else.”
