He Chose Her On Our Wedding Night So I Took Everything Chapter 34
“You were the one who led her into the guest room. You were the one who promised her one day out of every weekend. You were the one who told me I had to accept her.”
“Long before she posted those chats, your company was already using substandard fabric, and your testing documents were already a mess.”
“None of those were choices she made for you.”
Eric’s eyes grew red.
“I was just trying to manage her. I never thought you’d actually leave.”
“You never thought so because everyone around you—the maids, the house manager, Madison, and you yourself—all believed that one wedding was enough to trap me.”
He lowered his head.
After a moment, he asked, “Are you and Wyatt going to get married?”
“That’s not a question you get to ask.”
“I just want to know if I ever had a chance.”
At last, he said the words that had come far, far too late.
“Elodie, I regret it.”
I felt none of the satisfaction I might have once imagined, and none of the sadness, either.
“You regret losing the company, the business deal, and all the people who used to clean up your messes.”
“As for losing me… that was the last thing you thought of.”
He rushed to deny it.
“That’s not true. I did love you.”
“Maybe.”
I stood up.
“But loving me doesn’t cancel out the deceit and the humiliation.”
“You’re admitting this far too late, and I no longer need to hear it.”
The ten minutes were up.
My assistant opened the door.
When Eric reached the doorway, he turned back one last time.
“If I hadn’t lied about saving you back then, would things have been different?”
“No,” I answered.
“Even a life saved doesn’t entitle you to take over another person’s life.”
After the door closed, I went back to reviewing the opening day procedures.
Outside, the staff was hanging the final brand signage.
Eric’s regret couldn’t turn back time.
And my life would never again make room for him.
