“When every financial paper in New York was writing about you and Serena, did you ever think of me? When your ten million dollars became her ticket to the project, her license to humiliate me, did you ever think of me?”
“Did you know Serena and I were rivals at the foundation? Was your donation meant to help her all along? Was it to embarrass me, to make me look like a fool for staying?”
I walked toward him, step by step, tears streaming down my face.
“You’re a hypocrite. You’re just like her. You both make me sick.”
Liam’s jaw tightened, his face turning to ice.
“I didn’t know!” His own voice rose. “I had no idea what was going on between you and her at the foundation! I never wanted to embarrass you!”
I laughed, a harsh sound that was more like a sob.
“You didn’t know? The entire New York business world says Serena is the woman you can’t forget. Who doesn’t know you were on that board for her? Arthur Hayes told everyone you chose her proposal!”
“Elara!”
Liam’s eyes were suddenly red-rimmed. He practically shouted to cut me off.
“The name on the voting proxy I gave the board was Elara. It was you.”
His chest heaved, each word seeming to be forced out.
